Tachograph calibration in Brigg, North Lincolnshire

A tachograph that isn’t calibrated correctly isn’t just a compliance problem — it’s a risk to the driver and the operator. Under EU and UK regulations, every tachograph must be calibrated by an approved tachograph centre at least every two years, or after any repair or adjustment that affects its accuracy.

Direct Commercial Vehicle Services is an approved tachograph centre in Brigg. We carry out calibration for both digital and analogue tachographs, issue calibration certificates, and handle tachograph repairs when faults develop.

What tachograph calibration involves

Calibration is the process of checking that the tachograph accurately records vehicle speed, distance and driving time — the data that DVSA and traffic commissioners rely on for compliance checks. During a calibration, we:

  • Verify the tachograph unit is recording correctly

  • Check the vehicle’s tyre size against the tachograph parameters

  • Confirm the w-factor and k-factor settings are correct

  • Test the speed and distance accuracy

  • Issue a calibration plaque and certificate

The calibration plaque should be clearly displayed in the vehicle cab. DVSA roadside inspectors and enforcement officers check for it as part of routine inspections.

When calibration is required

Calibration is required every two years as a minimum. You’ll also need a new calibration after any of the following: a tyre size change, a tachograph repair or replacement, a change to the final drive ratio, a repair to the vehicle’s speed sensor, or after the vehicle has been in an accident that may have affected the tachograph’s accuracy.

If you’re not sure when your vehicles were last calibrated, the calibration plaque in the cab should show the date. Don’t leave it until renewal time to discover the records aren’t in order.

Tachograph repairs

If your tachograph is displaying errors, failing to record correctly, or showing signs of tampering damage, we can assess the unit and carry out repairs where possible. In some cases, replacement is the right course — we’ll advise you honestly on the most cost-effective option.

Digital and analogue tachographs

Most vehicles registered after 2006 run digital tachographs. Older vehicles may still have analogue (chart-based) units. We work on both. If you have a mixed-age fleet, we can deal with all of your tachograph requirements in one visit.
